Milieu is a formal word that refers to the physical or social setting in which people live or in which something happens or develops.

ORIGINE

It’s not difficult to locate another word within the milieu of milieu, whose final four letters spell lieu. Lieu is an archaic word meaning “place,” today used almost exclusively in “in lieu of” (= in the place of), as in “in lieu of cash a credit card is acceptable.” English users borrowed this lieu from Anglo-French—the French language used in medieval England—in the 13th century. It wasn’t until many centuries later, in the mid-1880s, that English adopted milieu from the French spoken in France. (In Old French, milieu meant “midst,” from mi, meaning “middle,” + lieu.) Both milieu and lieu have an ancestor in the Latin word for place, locus, as does many an English word, including locate.
