Word of the Day

Definition

the setting in which people live or in which something occurs

Milieu is a formal word that refers to the physical or social setting in which people live or in which something happens or develops.

EXAMPLE

Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jean Toomer were among the many writers who flourished in the intellectual milieu of the Harlem Renaissance.

IN CONTEXT

“‘Hombre al Agua’ starts out playful and grows more overtly comic, particularly once politics is thrown into the mix. At one point, a character compares the film’s milieu, the world of the rich, to old sci-fi movies where astronauts land on a planet that looks a lot like earth but turns out to be completely different.” — Steve Pond, The Wrap, 6 Sept. 2026

ORIGIN

It’s not difficult to locate another word within the milieu of milieu, whose final four letters spell lieu. Lieu is an archaic word meaning “place,” today used almost exclusively in “in lieu of” (= in the place of), as in “in lieu of cash a credit card is acceptable.” English users borrowed this lieu from Anglo-French—the French language used in medieval England—in the 13th century. It wasn’t until many centuries later, in the mid-1880s, that English adopted milieu from the French spoken in France. (In Old French, milieu meant “midst,” from mi, meaning “middle,” + lieu.) Both milieu and lieu have an ancestor in the Latin word for place, locus, as does many an English word, including locate.
